What is Treks 4 Tots?

Treks 4 Tots is the only company in the UK offering treks specifically for young children (4-7 year olds) on minature Shetland ponies. We are based in Gifford, East Lothian, amidst beautiful countryside at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills.

On a trek with us, your child will be given the opportunity to experience getting to know, caring for and riding one of our ponies. It is a unique and precious experience for any young boy or girl. Each of our ponies has been specially selected, broken and trained by Rachel, and bred for their gentle, easy-going temperament.

We believe that spending time with Andy, Wizard and Bella is not only hugely enjoyable for children, but will also teach them about responsibility and empathy for animals. They will also be equipped with invaluable experience, should they carry on riding as they grow older.

About Rachel

Rachel grew up in East Lothian and has been interested in all animals, especially horses from an early age. She has pursued this interest throughout school, college and beyond. Rachel was the first candidate to receive a full equestrian scholarship to Queen Ethelburga’s College in Yorkshire, which included full livery of her horse. She received a further full scholarship into the Sixth Form which included British Horse Society tuition, studying for BHS stages one, two and three and Assistant Instructor exams.

This scholarship gave her the valuable experience of weekly lessons from Olympic rider Karen Dixon. She then went on to be selected to be the sixth form prefect for the sought after “Head of Equestrian “ role which included responsibility for running equestrian events, supervising care of pupils’ horses and teaching QE’s Chapter House Prep School students. After school Rachel studied at Warwickshire Agricultural College for the AN CEBM (Advanced National Certificate in Equine and Business Management) then an HND in Equine Studies. Whilst studying she also competed in affiliated dressage, show jumping and horse trials.

After finishing college Rachel continued to compete in show jumping and eventing and built up a good client base, teaching both adults and children. Rachel also started producing young horses, to sell on as potential competition horses which has proved very successful. Just before having her daughter Maia in 2004 Rachel bought a miniature Shetland pony called Andy from Lethen Stud, Tweedale and started training him for her child to ride when she was old enough.

Maia has been riding Andy since she was a baby and now at the age of four she is a very confident rider and adores not only Andy but also the latest additions Wizard and Bella! Maia has inheritted Rachel's love of ponies; she has also learned to help care for them, grooming, helping to make up feeds and even some mucking out! It was this wonderful bond between Andy and Maia which led to the idea of TREKS 4 TOTS enabling other children to discover the unique bond a young child can have with one of those wonderful ponies.
